Learning through Discussion and Dialogue in Computer Supported Collaborative Networks

چکیده
We have analyzed data from two online courses designed to promote collaborative online learning. Ongoing assessment (self, group, instructor) that actively engages students within the course (as opposed to instructor assessment at the end) is a central feature for achieving collaborative knowledge building in online dialog. Careful articulation and deployment of assessment criteria is a design feature that promotes meta-awareness, which, in turn, together with student-centeredness and operationalization of student experiences in the design of the curriculum, enhances student participation, motivation and ownership in the dialog. From eight years of experience with online dialog and two quite different implementations we offer a set of design principles, having a sound theoretical basis, that enhance the quality and quantity of online knowledge building. Our analysis suggests that the characteristics of the discussion threads emerging under these design criteria give evidence of true collaborative learning.

The interactions among peers in Peer-to-Peer systems as a distributed collaborative system are based on asynchronous and unreliable communications. Trust is an essential and facilitating component in these interactions specially in such uncertain environments. Various attacks are possible due to large-scale nature and openness of these systems that affects the trust. Peers has not enough inform...

متن کاملSupporting Collaborative Learning With An Intelligent Web-Based System
This research describes an Intelligent Collaborative Support System (ICSS) that supports a collaborative effort by analyzing and modifying the collaborative process dynamically while employing a webbased interface. Based upon principles rooted in Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW), Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) and Cooperative Learning (CL), this system extends the Group Leader par...
متن کاملA dialogic understanding of the relationship between CSCL and teaching thinking skills
This paper reviews the literature linking ICT to teaching thinking skills and advocates a new dialogic framework which has implications for practice. The main conceptualisations of the relationship between ICT and teaching thinking are described as, the computer as tutor, the computer as cognitive tool and the computer as support for collaborative learning. The computer supported collaborative ...
متن کاملExploring the lack of dialogue in computer-supported collaborative learning
Research in collaborative learning has supported the hypothesis that dialogue between peers and between peers and teachers facilitates learning by the peer participants in the dialogue. Examples of these dialogues show dozens of turns (individual utterances by participants) in a single learning session. In contrast, measurements of interaction from computer-supported collaborative learning envi...
